Transport Data

Analysis of current North East transport trends, including patronage and customer satisfaction on public transport, and data about use of cars and other private vehicles.

Latest data

This section contains data on how we move around the region, and how that compares to other parts of the country. There’s data on specific modes of transport, including bus and rail, as well as a set of indicators relating to the Tyne and Wear Metro including punctuality, reliability and customer satisfaction. The Census data on commuting patterns and travel to work areas tells us how people move around the region for work, and there is an important dataset on access to services which tells us about transport-related social exclusion.

National Travel Survey 2023

The National Travel Survey is a household survey of residents of England travelling within Great Britain. It is designed to monitor long-term trends in personal travel and is the primary source of data on English travel patterns.

Results are published yearly at a regional level, with the North East data including both the North East and Tees Valley Combined Authority areas.  The survey results are used to get an idea on how, why, when and where people travel, as well as exploring factors affecting travel in the North East.

Our analysis of the latest data highlights that the North East had the highest number of local bus trips per person outside of London in 2023. It also had the second highest rate of walking and cycling trips.
