Patronage of the Shields Ferry, which operates between North Shields and South Shields, is derived from actual recording of passenger journeys recorded by the Electronic Ticket Machines on board.
Nexus operates the ferry fleet which in addition to a timetabled service also operates private hires and river trips. The busiest day for the ferries occurs on Great North Run.
Please note the Shields Ferry service was suspended between 29 January 2026 and 27 April 2027 following Storm Chandra, due to storm damage. Following repair works, specialist monitoring equipment has been installed and reviewed to support a safe reopening.
