Data on inward investment

The data on this page comes from Invest North East England, the inward investment agency for the seven local authorities in the North East. The data has been collected from their internal records of inward investment and may not match the estimates published by The Department for Business and Trade.

On this page foreign direct investment (FDI) refers to new investment and re-investment from foreign owned companies. UK investment refers to new investments from UK owned companies but excludes re-investments.

Inward investment in the North East

The North East has seen considerable inward investment from the rest of the UK and internationally over the last 10 years. The number of international projects and jobs created have been greater than those from UK inward investors.

Since 2014/15 inward investment has created at least 1,500 jobs every year in the North East, with the highest number of jobs being created in 2021/22 when over 8,500 jobs were created in the region.

The United States has been the major source of inward investment in the North East over last 10 years. Almost a third of international inward investment projects have been made by US based companies.

New jobs over the last three years have been split across over different sectors. Distribution, financial and professional services, advanced manufacturing and digital tech have been the major sectors of investment.
