Energy consumption
In 2019 the total energy consumed per 10,000 adults in the North East LEP area was equivalent to18 thousand tonnes of oil equivalent. This was considerably lower than the 40 thousand tonnes of oil equivalent in England excluding London.
35% of the energy consumed in the North East LEP was consumed by industrial and other areas, 33% by domestic residences and 33% by transport.
Changes over time
Total energy consumption fell by 20% between 2005 and 2019. This was a greater fall than the 15% fall in England excluding London over the same period.
The energy consumed from Bioenergy in the North East LEP has considerably increased since 2005 while the energy consumed from all other sources declined.
The energy consumed by transport has remained stable while the energy consumed by domestic areas and industry has decreased by 23% and 30%.
Covid-19 impact
There is more recent data that shows how gas and electricity consumption changed between 2019 and 2020 due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Electricity consumption fell in the North East LEP area in 2020, with an 11% fall in non-domestic consumption only partially offset by a 5% increase in domestic consumption. In contrast gas consumption remained broadly stable, increasing by 1.7% in the North East LEP area overall.
